What are different types of touch screens made of?
March 26, 2025
There are many types of touch screens, and screens with different technologies (such as capacitive, resistive, infrared) also have significant differences in material selection. Today, we will take you through the material composition of different touch screens from a technical perspective, helping you choose the most suitable product solution.
1. Capacitive touch screen (mainstream choice)
Capacitive screens are currently the preferred choice for smartphones and tablets, and their core materials include:
Surface glass: High hardness tempered glass to ensure durability.
ITO conductive layer: used to sense the charge changes of fingers and achieve multi touch.
Flexible Circuit (FPC): connects touch sensors and main control chips to ensure stable signal transmission.
The advantages of capacitive screens are high sensitivity and support for multi touch, but their response to non-conductive objects such as gloves is weak.
2. Resistive touch screen (low-cost solution)
A resistive screen is composed of two layers of flexible conductive films (usually ITO coated PET) separated by tiny dots in the middle. When the user presses, the two layers of film come into contact and the touch position is determined by voltage changes.
Advantages: Low cost, can be operated with any object (stylus, gloves).
Disadvantages: Low light transmittance, no support for multi touch, gradually replaced by capacitive screens.
3. Infrared touch screen (for large-sized applications)
Infrared screens are typically used for large-sized devices such as interactive whiteboards or self-service terminals. It arranges infrared emitters and receivers at the edge of the screen to locate touch points by blocking infrared radiation.
Advantages: No physical contact, suitable for outdoor or high durability scenarios.
Disadvantages: susceptible to strong light interference and high cost.
